Philosophy provided by Babies To Bu...
Philosophy On DisciplineInfants and children are taught that we never hurt our friends, weather it be physical or emotional. If a child hits another child, (or provider) we use timeout in minutes according to age and we discuss with the child the behavior that put them there. We then explain to the children what other methods we can use to resolve an issue and when a similar situation arises, we ask the child to tell us what they should do to solve the problem. We like for the children to learn to use appropriate methods for solving their issues. If as adults we always take control of the situation at hand, the children will not learn how to deal with things that my happen when enrolled in school full time, or while in a social gathering with their friends. We believe in redirecting a child to a different area if the child is in a minor squabble with another child over a toy. We teach sharing and manners by having the children learn to ask for the item they wish to use. Most of the time, the other child will release the item, but when the child will not, we tell the one asking to find a different item to play with till the other child is finished.
Philosophy On TeachingI believe that a child learns best by example, and we as adults must show the best example we can in order to teach a child how to behave. When teaching words, numbers, letters, colors, etc, we like to use a association and fun methods like acting. Children absorb what we teach them, and they learn best if we make it fun. For instance, at lunch one afternoon, the children refused their vegetables, so I pretended I could not open the freezer and told them that the Vegetables inside were holding the door shut. I asked them to give me a bite of their green beans, and they handed me one. I ate it and pretended to open the door, all the while with the vegetables inside pulling the door back! As I kept eating bean after bean (in this case, 6, one from each child) I finally opened the door and explained to the children that if I want to be as strong as the vegetables INSIDE the freezer, I need to eat all mine! The children were so excited that they ate some!
Philosophy On Toilet-TrainingA child will go potty when they are ready, period. However, when they are in training, we NEVER scold for an accident. We encourage a child to try and go on the potty even after cleaning up a soiled diaper. It helps the children have control and realize that they can still sometimes go even if they already have in a diaper. Accidents are expected in this learning process and are never punished.
