Since 1/3 of a child’s calories come from in between meal snacks, it would only make good nutrition sense to provide healthy and chemical free snacks for your child or for the children you are caring for. Many children’s diets are high in saturated and trans fats, sugar, high fructose corn syrup and sodium because of all the fast food and convenience foods readily available. Plan ahead and stash healthy snacks for your kids in the car, backpack, sports bag or purse for those last minute snack urges. Be proactive and ask your child’s school, daycare or sports team to offer healthier snacks or get together with other parents and come up with an acceptable snack list when snacks are being provided.
We need to get our children back on track with a balanced diet that is high in fiber, fruits, veggies, whole grains, lean meats and protein. We should also ditch all the artificial colors, flavors and preservatives found in many “conventional” foods. These harmful chemicals can be linked to behavior problems, allergens and some are even shown to be cancer causing. Take time to read labels and check the ingredient list when you are grocery shopping. Many favorite kid foods (granola bars, yogurt, fruit snacks and sports drinks) contain many of these unwanted ingredients. Snacking can be fun and healthy for kids it just takes some time and planning. Parents, caretakers, teachers, grandmas and grandpas…set a good example and snack healthy too!
